Son Lux's new album "Out Into" is out September 18th.

Son Lux is an experimental band...
...and strives to question assumptions about how music is made and construct their own from a molecular level, cultivating a musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites. Over two decades, the band has released numerous recordings marked by raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions, and performed at major venues and festivals globally. Son Lux scored A24’s Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which they were nominated for two Academy Awards and a BAFTA, as well as Marvel Studios Thunderbolts* (2025) and the upcoming Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother (2026).

RISK OF MAKE BELIEVE

The release of Lanterns in 2013 was a breakout moment for Son Lux. Fans, critics, and musicians were drawn into the album’s otherworldly vortex of sound. NPR described Lanterns as the "most fully realized Son Lux album," noting that the music rested “comfortably at the nexus of 21st-century R&B, hip-hop and synthpop.” Album tracks like “Easy”, and “Lost It To Trying” earned millions of streams online, and were covered/sampled by pop stars around the globe. The glowing success of Lanterns cast a bright light on the future of Son Lux, providing a strong signal of things to come.

Son Lux has evolved in unexpected ways since the release of Lanterns, as evidenced in their recent Oscar performance with David Byrne and Stephanis Hsu (Son Lux’s score for the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once was nominated for two Academy Awards). Alternate Forms celebrates that journey, while honoring the collaborative spirit of Lanterns.

Collaboration is a foundational element in the creative process of Son Lux, and Alternate Forms offers a formidable set of contributors, including Kishi Bashi, Sen Morimoto, KAINA, Sedcairn, Sound of Ceres, Chris Pattishall, Vuyo Sotashe, Jordan Munson, Isaiah Robinson, Anna B Savage, DM Stith, vōx, Alex Tanas, Kilamanzego, and Omari Jazz. The album’s artwork has also been reimagined by Lanterns cover art designers Ryan Sievert and Anthony Ciannamea.

Tomorrows Reworks Part 1 pushes Son Lux’s longstanding practice of reinventing releases into new territory, channeling a breadth of perspectives and collaborative formats into a focused new EP reworking tracks from their Tomorrows trilogy. The band invited Lotic, Nappy Nina, Jon Bap, Black Taffy, and Emily Wells into the fold to refashion the songs in a range of ways, from traditional remixes to ground-up reimaginings.

Lotic dissolves “Honesty”’s refrain into fluttering technicolor, while Jon Bap’s take on “Plans We Made” skitters evocatively, like a film of human motion with select frames removed. Black Taffy’s “Unbind” sublimates the original’s strings into an undulating haze undergirded by booming, ceremonial bass. In Emily Wells’ hands, “Come Recover” takes on an oceanic quality, like a lullaby for a coral reef fighting back from bleaching. In collaboration with the band, Nappy Nina interrogates a fraught relationship in a retooled “Live Another Life,” reflecting: “we forage and make believe, force a forest with made up leaves.”

TOMORROWS REWORKS

As Tomorrows II opens, the listener joins an album already unfolding. The music provides an appropriate parallel for the sustained cacophony of the present moment, advancing a friction that reveals the strange in the familiar and the familiar in the strange. While this carefully crafted inversion acclimatizes the ear to tension, the steadily hardening exterior fractures at unlikely moments, revealing a strikingly visceral, emotional core. The process of creating Tomorrows is iterative in nature, with the lyrical content and music continually adapting and responding to one another and the shifting landscape of the moment.

Plans We Make with Son Lux is a unique artist-interviewing-artist podcast where band members Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang take turns speaking with guests about a shared theme in five volumes: Technology, Collaboration, Story, Voice, and Reinvention.

PLANS WE MAKE — OFFICIAL SON LUX PODCAST

More pervasive than a virus, anxiety and urgency has spread across our physical and virtual landscapes. The growing inequities of centuries old and current day complexes of oppression has reached a critical and necessary breaking point, forcing us out of our severe isolation back together in a call for justice. All the while, the continued trajectory towards climate catastrophe still creeps across the horizon into our view, another result of the valuing of profit over people.

These defining traits of the present moment find parallels on the newest body of work by Son Lux: Tomorrows, a long-format album to be released in three volumes over the course of a year. On Tomorrows, Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang train their sights on volatile principles: imbalance, disruption, collision, redefinition. But for all of its instability, Tomorrows’ exploration of breaking points and sustained frictional places is ultimately in service of something rewarding and necessary: the act of questioning, challenging, tearing down and actively rebuilding one’s own identity.

Arriving at a time of considerable uncertainty in the world, Tomorrows is ambitious in scope and intent. Born of an active, intentional approach to shaping sound, the music reminds us of the necessity of questioning assumptions, and of sitting with the tension.

Reincarnates is a collection of unheard recordings from our archives, including the very first live performance of Lanterns’ “Alternate World,” and three arrangements of Bones' "Change Is Everything.” Chris Thile appears on the previously unheard “DBML,” and a rework of 2017’s “Remedy” features a crowd-sourced choir of more than 300 voices; "Find your voice, in the sea of surging bodies and breath, to form a melody, to find a remedy.” These songs and sounds have strange new resonance in the moment. Released May 1, 2020.
