Sam Beam, known as Iron & Wine, was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and earned a B.A. in art and an MFA in film. While teaching filmmaking in Miami, he began recording songs on a borrowed four-track, eventually passing cassettes to friends. One reached Mike McGonigal, who included Beam's "Dead Man's Will" on a compilation. The name Iron & Wine came from an antique tonic bottle. Beam signed to Sub Pop, releasing his self-recorded debut *The Creek Drank the Cradle* in 2002. He followed with *Our
