I’m an Englishman living in England. I’m now in my mid-70’s. I have loved Bluegrass since I ‘discovered’ it in my youth. I recall in the late ‘60’s/early 70’s trying various record stores in different parts of the Country, trying to find a source of Flatt &amp; Scruggs music. Needless to say, all I got were blank looks. One would have thought I was speaking a foreign language. There was no YouTube, and indeed no internet back then, so I’m so pleased to be able to view things like this now. Thank you.

I went to high school with the Scruggs&#39; sons and Josh Graves son and daughter. I remember walking to school many mornings and passing the Martha White bus outside the Scruggs house loading up to hit the road again. A lot of good memories of a truly great bluegrass group.

Ronnie Milsap is a real trooper for enduring his own personal tragedy, and yet, still being able to honor his late friends, Ray Charles and Naomi Judd.

There has never been a night like BIG NIGHT (At the Museum). Troubled times often bring out the best in us all, and these times have called for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to remove some of its most treasured instruments from their cases, and place them in the hands of modern masters for an unprecedented night of music.

BIG NIGHT is an important fundraising event in support of the Museum, a non-profit institution, which has been hit hard financially by the pandemic. During the program, hosted by Country Music Hall of Fame member Marty Stuart, some of country and roots music’s brightest stars render timeless songs using those priceless instruments.

Outlaws and Armadillos: Country's Roaring '70s

In May 2023, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum celebrated the donation of renowned musician, bluegrass pioneer, and Country Music Hall of Fame member Earl Scruggs’s storied Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone banjo to the Museum’s permanent collection.

Scruggs played the iconic banjo throughout his more than 60-year career, including in concerts, on TV sound stages, and in the recording studio with Flatt & Scruggs and the Earl Scruggs Revue. The banjo can be heard on Scruggs’s famous composition "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys—showcasing his innovative three-finger picking style that would influence generations of musicians and expand the possibilities of the instrument across the world. The Gibson banjo remained Scruggs’s primary instrument until his passing in March 2012.

Vince Gill opens the ceremony, followed by remarks by Museum CEO Kyle Young. Lindsey Scruggs, Earl’s granddaughter, shares her memories of her grandfather playing the banjo and offered thanks to the Museum for its stewardship of country music’s story.

The Earls of Leicester—Jerry Douglas (dobro), Shawn Camp (lead vocals and guitar), Jeff White (mandolin), Johnny Warren (fiddle), Daniel Kimbro (bass), and Charlie Cushman (banjo)—perform "Salty Dog Blues" and "Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” and are joined by Sierra Ferrell singing “Before I Met You.”

Before Alison Brown’s performance of “Earl’s Breakdown,” backed by the Earls of Leicester, Brown and Douglas speak about the importance of the banjo’s donation and the original instruments of Flatt & Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys being reunited again in performance for the first time in more than fifty years. "These instruments are the reason why I play music at all," said Douglas.

Following the ceremony, Scruggs’s Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone banjo was returned to the museum’s galleries. The banjo is on display in the museum’s Precious Jewel core exhibition, alongside several other iconic instruments.

The Earls of Leicester, Sierra Ferrell, and Alison Brown Honor Earl Scruggs

Studio drummer Eddie Bayers, singer-pianist Ray Charles, pedal steel guitarist Pete Drake, and the mother-daughter duo the Judds, officially joined the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 1, in a star-studded Medallion Ceremony at the Museum’s CMA Theater. It was an evening filled with once-in-a-lifetime musical performances and heartfelt, and at times tearful, testimonials. 
 
The death of Naomi Judd on the eve of the induction ceremony gave the event a muted sense of mourning, tender reflection, and open-hearted fellowship. The audience observed a moment of silence in memory of Judd and two other Hall of Fame members who died since the last Medallion Ceremony in November: radio and television personality Ralph Emery and studio pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins. 
 
Those presenting musical highlights from the inductees’ careers included Country Music Hall of Fame members Garth Brooks and Vince Gill. They were joined by Elizabeth Cook, Bettye LaVette, Wendy Moten, Carly Pearce, Tommy Sims, Trisha Yearwood, and the duos the War and Treaty (Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount Trotter) and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Country Music Hall of Fame member Marty Stuart led the audience in the ceremonial closing song, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” 
 
Following longstanding custom, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, chosen by the inductee, welcomed each new member. For the class of 2021 — whose official induction was delayed due to the pandemic — Charlie McCoy inducted Drake, Gill inducted Bayers, Ricky Skaggs inducted the Judds, and Ronnie Milsap inducted Charles.

Over the course of four days, four teenaged students took the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's crash course in songwriting, each crafting, recording, and performing an original composition with the help of industry professionals. "Words & Music: Journey of a Song" documents their experiences in a five-episode series, available to watch beginning December 13.

Follow Abby Whitman, Jazmine Croom, Max Rees, and Avalon Simpson on their inspiring journeys to the heart of what makes a song, and ultimately, a successful recording artist. Guided by singer-songwriter and two-time ACM Award winner Tenille Townes, Grammy-winning songwriter, producer, arranger, and BMI executive Shannon Sanders, singer-songwriter and Monument Records recording artist Caitlyn Smith, and #1 hit songwriter and producer Cameron Bedell, students take their stories from the page to the stage, culminating in a demo and performance finale with the help of producer and engineer Kevin Dailey and Big Machine Music President, Mike Molinar. Celebrate Patty Loveless's induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame by watching this special interview and performance filmed as part of the Museum's "Live at the Hall" series.

Longtime Nashville record company executive Joe Galante, incendiary pianist and singer Jerry Lee Lewis, and influential country vocal stylist Keith Whitley officially joined the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 16. The trio of country music luminaries “took very different paths to greatness,” said Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young, but together they became the Hall of Fame’s 147th, 148th, and 149th members during a star-studded Medallion Ceremony filled with tributes both heartfelt and humorous and musical performances that ranged from acoustic songs to raucous romps that brought the crowd to their feet. 
 
The ceremony’s musical performers included Country Music Hall of Fame members Teddy Gentry and Randy Owen of Alabama, Bill Anderson, Garth Brooks, and Ricky Skaggs, as well as Kenny Chesney, Mickey Guyton, Chris Isaak, Miranda Lambert, the McCrary Sisters, Justin Moses, Molly Tuttle, and Lee Ann Womack, all backed by the Medallion All-Star Band. Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Anderson and the band led the crowd in the Medallion Ceremony’s traditional finale, a rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” 
  
As is the longstanding custom, each new Country Music Hall of Fame member selected a fellow member to officially induct them into the Hall of Fame. This year, Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn inducted Galante, Garth Brooks inducted Whitley, and Hank Williams Jr. inducted Lewis.

BIG NIGHT (At the Museum) | Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

Delve into the dynamic history of Hank Williams Jr., who, like his famous father, created a distinctive and influential sound, wrote enduring, widely loved songs, and, with the announcement of its 2020 class, became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

After Hank Williams’s death in 1953, Hank Jr. was raised by his mother, Audrey Williams, and quickly began following in his father's musical footsteps. He performed his first concert at age eight, and at fourteen, released his first album, featuring covers of his father’s songs.

As he matured, Hank Jr. began writing his own songs and merging his broad musical interests. His Southern rock album breakthrough, “Hank Williams Jr. & Friends,” released in 1975, displayed a bold blend of country, Delta blues, and country rock, and drew acclaim from critics and younger fans.
 
Williams shaped a bold public persona and a musical style that influenced generations of country singers, earning twenty-one gold and platinum albums and a long list of significant hits, including “Family Tradition,” “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down),” “A Country Boy Can Survive,” and “There’s a Tear in My Beer,” a digitally created duet with his father.

Hank Williams Jr.: The Country Music Hall of Fame

Over the course of four days, four teenaged students took the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's crash course in songwriting, each crafting, recording, and performing an original composition with the help of industry professionals. The five-episode series, "Words & Music: Journey of a Song," documents their experiences.

In this fourth episode, follow Avalon Simpson on her inspiring journey to the heart of what makes a song, and ultimately, a successful recording artist. Guided by #1 hit songwriter and producer Cameron Bedell, Avalon takes her story and her song, "Kenopsia," from the page to the stage, her journey culminating in recording a demo and performing her song live in the CMA Theater with the help of producer and engineer Kevin Dailey and Big Machine Music President, Mike Molinar.

Songwriter and producer Cameron Bedell wrote Tiera Kennedy’s first radio single, “Found It in You;” Seaforth’s first radio single, “Breakups;” and Dylan Scott's "Tough" from Scott's latest album, "Livin' My Best Life." Bedell’s songs have also been recorded by Lauren Alaina, Ryan Griffin, and others.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Anderson joins the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville for an episode of “Live at the Hall,” performing and sharing memories from his career as a recording artist, songwriter, TV host, and actor.

The Museum explores the Grand Ole Opry mainstay's life and music in the exhibition “Bill Anderson: As Far as I Can See” (open December 3, 2021, through March 19, 2023), and his intimate interview and performance was recorded live on December 4, 2021, during the exhibition's opening-weekend celebration.

Bill Anderson 'Live at the Hall,' 2022

Jason Isbell performs “Pancho and Lefty” at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum during the opening concert in 2018 for the major exhibition “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring '70s.” One of Willie Nelson’s many hits, “Pancho and Lefty” was written by Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt.
 
The Outlaw phenomenon increased country music’s audience in the 1970s, led by pacesetters such as Nelson, Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Bobby Bare, and many others—a time defined by artists in Nashville and Austin demanding creative freedom to make their own music. In this series, we mark memorable performances from the museum’s opening concert. The exhibition closes June 7.

In January of 2023, HARDY, a two-time Academy of Country Music Songwriter of the Year, released his second studio album, "the mockingbird & THE CROW." A mixture of upbeat, modern country and harder, darker rock, the album includes the hit song "wait in the truck," a duet with singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson. The pair are featured in the latest installment of "American Currents," the annual Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibit designed to offer perspective on country music's latest chapter.

The life and music of Waylon Jennings—whose distinctive creative vision and artistic integrity made him a leader in country's Outlaw movement—are explored in this encore compilation from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, part of the ongoing performance and interview series “Live at the Hall.”

In footage captured live at the Museum, Jennings’s wife and fellow singer-songwriter Jessi Colter, his bandleader Richie Albright, songwriters Billy Joe Shaver and Sharon Vaughn, producer Kyle Lehning, and others share stories and performances centering around Jennings and his career.

The digital program is presented in support of the Museum's major exhibition "Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s."

Established in 1979, "Words & Music" is a curriculum-based, multi-component education program that teaches students to write lyrics and pairs them with professional songwriters while connecting them to the Nashville music community.

The Judds — mother Naomi and daughter Wynonna — helped return country music to its roots in the 1980s with songs influenced by folk music, acoustic blues, and family harmony acts. Between 1984 and 1991, they had twenty Top Ten country hits, including fourteen #1s. 
 
The duo overcame poverty and repeated setbacks in life to rise to worldwide fame, thanks to the perseverance of Naomi Judd and her recognition of daughter Wynonna’s remarkable voice.

The Judds: The Country Music Hall of Fame

Explore the life and career of Marty Stuart, a recording artist, songwriter, multimedia emissary for country music, and member of the 2020 class of Country Music Hall of Fame inductees.

Stuart has spent his life making musical history, often alongside those he calls country music’s “Old Testament masters,” including Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash—with whom he apprenticed early in his career—as well as Merle Haggard, Bill Monroe, Porter Wagoner, and Mac Wiseman.
 
He launched a successful solo career in the 1980s, releasing hit singles including “Arlene,” “Hillbilly Rock,” “Little Things,” and “Tempted.” Since the 2000s, Stuart has explored traditional country, gospel, and West Coast country-rock with his group the Fabulous Superlatives.

Tanya Blount Trotter and Michael Trotter Jr.—the standout duo known as The War And Treaty—performed “A Lesson in Leavin’,” celebrating Dottie West’s 2018 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame during the Museum’s Medallion Ceremony. One of the first singer-songwriters of the rock & roll era, Jackie DeShannon was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame for penning hits for herself and others. During a Museum program recorded as part of the "Poets and Prophets" series, she discussed her songwriting hits, including Brenda Lee’s “Dum Dum”; “When You Walk in the Room,” which was a success for the Searchers in the 1960s and decades later for Pam Tillis on the country charts; and the 1969 anthem “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” which DeShannon recorded herself and co-wrote with her brother, Randy Myers.

The Kentucky Voices of "American Currents: State of the Music"

A group of rising musicians, including S. G. Goodman, Nat Myers, and Kelsey Waldon, are bringing old and new Kentucky sounds to the world. The music is often about making alliances with outsiders, and it is made by peers who are in alliance with one another.

Born in the tiny town of Hickman on the Mississippi River in westernmost Kentucky, S. G. Goodman grew up singing Baptist hymns and listening to storytellers. They taught her that a sense of place is as important as the characters in your stories.

Nat Myers spent his early years on the move—from birth in Kansas to time in Tennessee—before his parents settled in northern Kentucky. Along the way, he began to embrace the poetry he found in music as a way of navigating the world.

Raised in the small rural community of Monkey's Eyebrow in the Ohio River bottoms of far western Kentucky, Kelsey Waldon grew up steeped in the sounds of country music, deciding she wanted to be a country singer after seeing Kentucky star Patty Loveless in 1994.

Joy Oladokun on “American Currents,” a Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibit

To celebrate the opening of his Haley Gallery exhibition “Lyrical Reconstructions,” American sculptor and printmaker Willie Cole visited the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to discuss his career and creative process.

In the interview, now available to stream, Cole explains the evolution of his work, which often blends familiar consumer objects with references to appropriated African and African American images. Open through May 16, "Lyrical Reconstructions” includes new work created for the exhibit using musical instruments, along with past pieces that highlight Cole’s use of art and found objects to address social injustice throughout his thirty-plus-year career. 

Recorded on March 28, 2024, this interview was moderated by Anne Collins Smith, director of the Xavier University of Louisiana Art Gallery. It was filmed at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, home of Haley Gallery, which organizes and displays a variety of art exhibitions each year. A portion of proceeds from artwork purchased in the gallery supports the nonprofit Museum’s educational mission.

As one half of the legendary songwriting duo Leiber and Stoller, Mike Stoller wrote and produced some of the most enduring classic songs of the 1950s and ’60s. In this clip, he recalls the moment he learned "Hound Dog" had become an enormous pop, R&B, and country hit for Elvis Presley in 1956. Leiber and Stoller also wrote “Jailhouse Rock,” “Loving You,” “King Creole,” “Treat Me Nice,” “(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care,” and other hits for Presley.
