It took Nathaniel Rateliff &amp; the Night Sweats less than five years to become one of the most recognizable new forces in contemporary rock ’n’ roll. Since 2015, Rateliff has led his denim-clad, horn-flanked Night Sweats, supplying the zeal of a whiskey-chugging Pentecostal preacher to songs about this world’s shared woes. They’ve had hits, sure, but their combustible mix of soul and rock quickly cemented them as the rare generational band who balanced ecstatic live shows with engrossing and rich records. To wit, is there any other modern act capable of revving up stadium crowds for The Rolling Stones while also appearing on Saturday Night Live and CMT Crossroads and at NPR’s Tiny Desk in short order? 

When Rateliff returned from his pandemic-truncated solo tour in March 2020, he struggled with the same question that vexed so many of us then—what now? Fortunately, he returned to his Colorado homestead and penned a set of songs that synthesized his introspection with his anthemic inclinations. The result is The Future, the third Night Sweats album but the first to capture this octet’s true depth and breadth. An instant classic of 11 songs, the album presents something more sustainable, interesting, and indeed open—a songwriter and band growing into bigger questions and sounds, into a future that allows them to remain recognizable but be so much more compelling than some denim-clad caricature.

This is one of those songs that you seem to already know, even though you are hearing it for the first time. As if it’s from a dream, or a past life. Bravo, guys.

Several years ago I spent the night at my grandparent&#39;s house and was messing with an old radio. This song played after a minute and my Grandma asked me about the song. I don&#39;t fully remember what she asked, but I remember her liking it. That seems like a silly, unimportant memory, but whenever I hear this song I&#39;m always reminded of it. I don&#39;t even think she listened to the full song or even said more than &quot;I like it.&quot; But her passion for music and life just seems to reverberate back into my mind every single time I hear this. Miss you Grandma

The way the bass guitar is mixed in this song ties everything together, and it provides an unbroken thread. But, it also leaves plenty of space for the lead vocal and the story the vocalist tells. The result is amazing. Not many bands achieve this kind of balance.

This song is about alcoholism. My father died of it. I almost died from it. I love you Nathaniel. You gave me a song to recognize my bullshit. I LOVE the fact that he uses NATURE to find his way in his struggles. She is is all natural in any struggle in life. Mother nature is LIFE! I love my trees and my mountains and l roaring rivers. She gives me peace when MAN and society never would.

My Dad introduced me to this band. He always had a great taste in music, From Alex Harvey to Roxy Music, he loved it all. Sadly last year, at 59, he passed away. I find myself always putting this song on as it was the last great tune he gave me :)

Link Wray’s Rumble was the first song I learned in guitar playing through a Champ my Uncle Ern got me. My favorite work of his came out of the shack sessions in 1971. From those recording came his self titled album Link Wray. Fallin’ Rain is just one a many amazing songs off the record and has become a huge influence in my song writing over the years
