I truly love how this song builds up through the verses. We start very grounded in childhood memories, then we move on to the struggles of early adulthood, and the last verse just takes you out there with those existential thoughts that&#39;ll stick with you forever. A true piece of art, I think!

On a day off in Spokane, Washington about 12/13 years ago, I rented a studio to work on some songs I was chipping away at. Spectrum had just come out and I started getting a lot of calls to write songs for DJ’s (lol). Left over Emo tendencies gave me the line “you are the piece of me I wish I didn’t need” saved in a notes doc that I’d been trying to work into a song. I never heard this song as a single for some reason but I remember being on tour in Europe with Ellie Goulding as it started charting in the US and thinking “well there you go, it’s never the ones you think.” Fun fact: next door when I was writing it, my brother Kris was working on launching his new company Big Fat Snare Drum which would go on to become a massive success & a staple on every drummer’s drum kit. Maybe we should move to Spokane and hang out with Jess Walter.

To be a Springsteen fan is to harbor the fanatical and religious like belief that there is one true god and his name is The Boss. I grew up in a family with a bloodline genetically inclined to favor atheism unless we were talking about the church of Bruce. He was my first concert, I’d seen 50+ shows through my young adulthood, and his music was / is my map. So when I got a call from Bruce’s long time producer Ron Aniello to come to New Jersey and produce a song called Rocky Ground off his “Wrecking Ball” album…that was as good as it got, that was “making it”. Especially in the midst of a successful stint in electronic music where I felt so misplaced and confused as to how the fuck I ended up there. I remember hearing the song for the first time on my favorite radio station in Los Angeles called KCSN and crying. Single handedly the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of. I got to introduce my dad (who has seen 100+ shows)  to Bruce and watch The River side stage with him. I’ve gotten to work on a few things since and it’s always just as surreal. So I guess I am religious after all.  Cue an entire day of watching 20 different versions of Badlands on YouTube and torturing my wife.

He shreds and he has great hair and I could leave it at that but I won’t. I have really vivid memories of driving around Long Island with my dad listening to “You’ll Think Of Me”, so when my ol’ buddy Dan McCarroll called to say he was looking for some ideas for Keith, I knew I wanted to come with something in that lane. My friend Fran Hall and I wrote this song one afternoon at my old house…I had just “quit” my career as an electronic artist and was writing a ton to try to find what would become the sound of Winnetka. Change Your Mind was a song written along the way to finding On The 5 which popped up only a few weeks later. It’s funny how that works. 

The first time I heard a voice note of Keith messing around with idea it was such an obvious fit. He was supposed to tell that story and I’m so glad he wanted to. We recorded the song at Henson and ordered Zankou Chicken for Keith’s first time. 10/10 day, 10/10 human, 10/10 dad points. I bought an expensive “Ganjo” (a banjo tuned like a guitar) to use on the recording but was only gonna keep it if the song came out. Alas, I have a Ganjo sitting in my studio I haven’t touched since, if anyone is in the market for one please Zelle me.
