Maya’s third album, Chaos Angel, takes the spare, viscerally honest songwriting she has made her name on and goes deeper and bolder. Both her most sonically sophisticated and thematically nuanced collection to date, it feels like a culmination. Across these 10 songs, Hawke catalogs upheavals, revelations, foibles, and broken promises, all while navigating the patterns we repeat while reaching towards growth, wandering astray, and finding our way back to some core understanding of ourselves.

Chaos Angel is also a document of Hawke coming more fully into her own as a musician. More adventurous in the studio after her previous two albums, Hawke leaned into her ambition. Many of these tracks are still anchored by acoustic guitar and Hawke’s graceful yet conversational vocals, but their surroundings are more intricate and lush than ever before. She reconvened with longtime collaborators Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe, with Christian Lee Hutson serving as producer.

Maya’s not only an artist, but also a poet. Her words speak volumes and it’s so rare to see an artist deliver such intricate details. Her music is unlike any other and that’s why I consider her my favorite. She always gives me comfort and I love everything about her! I know I made no mention of that, but still… some of these comments were getting out of hand and I had to say something. Very profound and poetic. I think the song is inspired by the controversial painting called “Thèrése Dreaming”: a painting that depicts a young girl sitting in a “sexually provoking” manner. It was petitioned online to be removed but the MET museum refused for the reason of fostering “respect for creative expression”. This was also connected with Maya’s “Blue Hippo” MV. While this was the story behind the Thèrése artwork, my personal interpretation of the lyrics is that how some people (or Maya perhaps) can view the painting (Thèrése), as somehow resonating with how they want to live their own lives; e.g., her “tactlessness” from the way she sits on the chair, her nostalgia and introspection of the past, and hopes for the future. In other words, this song speaks to me as a longing for a “worry-free” life; an untainted innocence like the young Thèrése — from Maya’s standpoint (I think), an alternative way of looking at the painting not from the perspective of the painter (which made it controversial in the first place), but of the story and POV of the person (in this case Thèrése), in which Maya has poetically woven and painted with a pinch of her own imagination, of what would be—hypothetically—Thèrése’s wandering thoughts.

My belly empty my body weak
I had no sound no way to speak
 
I was close to quiet death again
When new instincts woke me from the spell
I killed a diamondback terrapin.
I was most scared of my awful self
 
I cut ripples with my dorsal fin.
I mimicked manatees and dolphins
I had no image no reflection
No way to make a comparison
 
I washed up on cold stones, broken glass
A winter beach at long islands end.
I found that I could still maneuver,
Slip slide on the sand and the cement.
 
 
I opened sardine dream mermaid bar.
We serve just oysters and caviar.
Leave your seashells in our tall tip jar.
There are more like me. I swear there are.
 
Come for scallops! Come to hear our song!
Come if you’re if in awful bad trouble!
Come if you’re certain you don’t belong!
Cause some that fall don’t land in bubbles.
