PJ Harvey’s career has always commanded attention. A multi-instrumentalist, she is primarily a vocalist, guitarist and pianist.

Accolades include an MBE for services to music, an Honorary Degree in Music at Goldsmiths, a BAFTA, eight Brit Award nominations, eight Grammy Award nominations and two further Mercury Prize nominations. She has authored two books of poetry, The Hollow of the Hand and Orlam.

In theatre she scored for director Ivo Van Hove’s 2018 adaptation of All About Eve, and has worked on numerous productions by acclaimed director Ian Rickson, including 2024’s <a href="spotify:album:6NXmIaLAsmdZtwoFDLSr1o" data-name="London Tide (World Premiere Recording)">London Tide (World Premiere Recording)</a>, and Tom Morris&#39; Othello in 2025. Ending

As a musical accompaniment to the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 here are some of the most fascinating and beautiful pieces of music I came across this year.

I look forward to the year ahead and continuing to work on my next project, as well as concluding the ‘I Inside’ tour in Australia and Japan.

PJ Harvey and Egyptian recording artist Ramy Essam have come together to write and record ‘The Camp’ which they hope will raise awareness and much needed support towards the health and educational well-being of displaced children in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The artists will donate all net profits from the track to Beyond Association in the Bekaa Valley, a national Lebanese non-Governmental Organisation.  Beyond Association provides services such as access to education, healthcare, and psycho-social support mainly through art therapy, neuro-physiotherapy, and recreational activities. 

‘The Camp’ - released digitally on Friday 9 June 2017 - was recorded in Bristol with Harvey’s longtime collaborator John Parish, who produced and mixed the track.

"It is hard to comprehend the scale of the crisis in Lebanon, a country of 4 million now hosting over 1 million Syrian refugees,” states photo-journalist Giles Duley whose arresting photographs feature in the official music video, edited by Rick Holbrook. “The infrastructure of the country is pushed to its limit, and nowhere is that situation more desperate than in the Bekaa Valley. However, there are some amazing organisations doing incredible, effective, and selfless work on the ground there, and of all the NGOs I have documented, none have impressed me more than Beyond. To visit their schools and witness their programs is to see hope - and that is something we have to support.”

The following is an excerpt from Ramy Essam's verse of The Camp, translated from Egyptian to English: "I wish I had wings to fly away, far away. Meet smiley faces who never ask where I came from; not to ask about colour, race, or religion. What difference does it make if we're all humans? No wars, no limits, no borders. Earth is everyone's right.”

PJ Harvey  - The Crowded Cell (Official Video)

PJ Harvey was recently invited to read a selection of Don Van Vliet's poetry at Michael Werner Gallery in London, as part of an exhibition of his paintings, Don Van Vliet: Standing on One Hand, from the 1980s and 1990s. The artist, also known by the stage name Captain Beefheart, has had a significant impact on PJ Harvey's own music and art. 

Polly says, "Thank you to the Michael Werner Gallery for inviting me to read Don's poems. It was a privilege to be able to give life to his words whilst standing amongst his paintings. Thanks also to Jan Van Vliet who helped me prepare for the reading, and for sending me a poem Don had written for me in 2001, called 'Man Can't Anticipate Cat', which I read at the end of the night."
