An American-made power metal outfit beloved in Europe, Virgin Steele skillfully assimilates classical influences into its romantic, symphonic-based sound. Emerging in the early 1980s, the group perfected its signature blend of melody and might on 1985's Noble Savage, drawing comparisons to progressive power metal contemporaries like <a href="spotify:artist:4CzUzn54Cp9TQr6a7JIlMZ">Manowar</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2OgUPVlWYgGBGMefZgGvCO">Queensrÿche</a>. Subsequent offerings like the Marriage of Heaven and Hell trilogy (1995-1998), the metal opera House of Atreus (1999-2000), the chamber music-inspired Gnostic concept LP Visions of Eden (2006), and the bombastic Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation (2015) and Passion of Dionysus (2023), saw the group looking to musical theater for inspiration. 

Led by vocalist/keyboardist David DeFeis since its inception in the fall of 1981, Virgin Steele began humbly with two self-released albums that, after being picked up for international distribution, brought in combined sales of nearly 400,000 units and critical praise from the metal underground. British metal mag Kerrang! even compared them to early <a href="spotify:artist:2tRsMl4eGxwoNabM08Dm4I">Judas Priest</a>. Virgin Steele's intriguing blend of classical, metal, and prog manifested itself fully for the first time on their third album, Noble Savage. This album marked a change for the band with the departure of original guitarist <a href="spotify:artist:3EGblpPEuyQzWOaShcMVPI">Jack Starr</a> -- whose more traditional anthems clashed with DeFeis' grandiose epics -- and the arrival of talented shredder Edward Pursino. The following album, Age of Consent, was more commercial than its predecessor, attempting to appeal to both hardcore and mainstream metal fans. Management and label problems prompted a hiatus that ended in the early '90s, when German interest rekindled the band's spark. While the ensuing Life Among the Ruins album stayed closer to the '80s sound, the following three records, The Marriage of Heaven & Hell, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, and Invictus, were powerful neo-classical metal epics that sold very well in Europe and Japan. Bearing the subtitle "A Barbaric-Romantic Opera," the band's formidable opera House of Atreus, Act I, dropped in 1999, followed closely by House of Atreus, Act II in 2000. 2006's Visions of Eden saw the group tackle a concept album concerning Gnostic beliefs, and like their previous outing, it was adapted for the stage and performed locally by Landestheater Production. The Black Light Bacchanalia, the group's power metal-heavy 12th studio long-player, was released in 2010, their first LP for new label <a href="spotify:artist:78sxSGdMQas5prtm6LZXyj">SPV/Steamhammer</a>. The band's second release for the label, Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation, followed in 2015. Celebrating their 35th anniversary, the band issued the career-spanning box set Seven Devils Moonshine in 2018, which included five full-length albums, three of which contained brand-new songs and re-recordings. My name's Alec Steele and here you'll find weekly videos documenting the process of building some awesome projects here in the shop. As a blacksmith, most of the projects start as lumps of steel, or stacks of different alloys for making damascus, that I forge out into blades, sculpture, art or tools before taking the project to the machining equipment or into the grinding room for finishing. Each project teaches me a lot and stretches the bounds of my knowledge. I make a lot of mistakes but they serve as an excellent teacher. There's always something important for me to learn in the shop! 

I want my work to be the spark that ignites the desire for you to get into your shop (or kitchen/basement/garage) and make something too! Whether it's stitching a leather wallet or forging a giant sword, you'll love the creative process.

Making a Katana with country music in the background is a classic.

I love that this man can handle working with red-hot metal, but not simple adhesives XD

It&#39;s not about the Katana, that&#39;s just eye candy. At only 19 Alec has acquired a unique skill set that defines him as a true craftsman. Still young but already has teaching skills and the ability to hold an audience and produces his own video&#39;s too, a very rare person indeed!

Actually most here criticizing are incorrect. There are 9 styles of forging a katana. This style would be considered Maru. Its ultimately the weakest version but still a recognized version of katana due to it&#39;s a single piece of steel forged. The steel used to make the best katana cannot be purchased by any one here criticizing this man. So short of the Sanmai style which is the 3rd best method on Japanese forging and most common in Japan today, no one in the world short of 3 people by the comments here can make a true katana. As for the layering comments. If you forge weld two 500k layer pieces you will have 1000000 layers. Congratulations young man you made a beautiful katana for that is a katana. Due to my love of Japanese culture I felt I had to correct some of these comments although I doubt the ones who claimed this is not a katana has fully studied the history up to present times.

Something similar that I would like to see is a copper aluminium &quot;DAMASCUS&quot; made in the same way. the aluminium however should diffuse into the copper forming aluminium bronze (a bright gold color) which assuming the copper is thick enough should form alternating bands with unalloyed copper. Might need to be done in an oxygen free environment though... maybe I can form the initial stack and get it welded together in my vacuum chamber and send it to you for the rest of the forging?

Anyone else know basically nothing about blacksmithing but still watching these whole videos during quarantine? Lol

It’s nice to see someone skilled playing with this technique. I made my mother a makume gane ring from nickel silver and copper, back in high school. Strong and beautiful. She’s still got it 20 years later.

You can heat the copper to turn it more red. Doing so also makes the Nickel brighter. If you can get the heat right, match the copper to a red wood to make the hardware and handle for a really bright Damascus project. If you can preserve the woodgrain at the intersection of the two, you could make a very interesting transition between the two.

I personally like the twisted pattern better. It&#39;s really bold and beautiful. I would love to see you try your hand at some more delicate work, say a twisted doghead bracelet or a ring of some sorts. Break from your usual which is knives and swords and make something purely decorative and fancy! No matter what, have fun with it and don&#39;t stop being you!

Coating the metals in flammable acetone is likely the reason they caught fire while welding.

That has got to be without question the most stunning color I&#39;ve seen come out of a forge. I would try machining some of down and see if it could be made into the body of a fine pen the weight alone with that pattern would be something I would buy from your site without hesitation

The first attempt had a beautiful organic pattern to it. Probably because of the imperfect twisting action.
