Pretty Lights is a musical project known for a unique fusion of electronic beats, poetic samples, modular synthesizers, and live musicians. Intricate sonic tapestries combined with dynamic breathing light shows transport listeners to cosmic planes, seamlessly blending the past and future into a rich present moment.
 
After a five-year hiatus, Pretty Lights is back with a newly constructed inter-dimensional soundship spacesystem. This frequency powered vehicle is designed to facilitate improvisational and expressive performances between himself and other artists across musical and visual mediums. The live show network allows for real-time data and control signals to be shared, creating a connected space for experimentation and creativity.
 
Dubtronic hiphop techno futurepast soul, audiovisual spectrally driven lightshows, non-timecoded fully generative visual systems, interconnected data networks linking performers across mediums, and loads of new live music are just some of the ways Smith has described the upcoming shows.

I ran a marathon a few days ago &amp; around mile 20 I was so exhausted that I started to question whether I could even finish. I listened to it full volume for the next six miles, felt great, powered through all of the hills without walking once &amp; finished strong. I owe my finish to this song.

“We ended up devising something we call ‘flips.” We’ll start with a produced song, and everyone has a philosophy for playing on top of the produced songs. Alvin has acoustic drums that he’ll play on top of it, and we also have drum triggers for electronic drum sounds so we can get a produced sound from the live kit. When I call a ‘flip’ everyone knows that I’m about to filter out the produced track. When the produced music disappears, the live musicians completely switch their sound to something that’s more electronic. Borahm will drop into a synth bass, Alvin will switch to an electronic kick and an electronic snare. It’s like a quick crossfade. It allows us to go from the produced track, with the band accentuating it, to a fully live band without losing something…It’s completely improvised but we’ve put a lot of time into making sure they know, stylistically, where the bounds are.”

Derek Vincent Smith -- aka Pretty Lights -- invited producers from a wide stylistic spectrum to remix the tracks from his latest album. Derek produced A Color Map of the Sun with no intention of having it be an album of dance floor bangers, but rather a collection of music that can be enjoyed anyplace, anytime, all the time.

These Remixes are other artists' interpretations of his compositions and self made vinyl samples. The tracks are mostly intended to be hard hitting, but they are also just very different.

Pretty Lights - Only Yesterday

The track is reminiscent of an earlier PL style,  a classic soulful hip-hop style.
The music video was created by Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) and his girlfriend Krystle Blackburn (PLM's creative Director). 
While the two of them traveled together all over the world during 2011, they filmed as much as their schedule allowed. Locations included in the video include Detroit, Warsaw, Oslo, NYC, Vancouver, London, Paris, Prague, Australia, New Zealand, Denver and many more. 
The aim with the video was to accomplish multiple things:
1 - Create a visual accompaniment for the music that added depth and complexity to the emotions being channeled by the music and lyrics... Rather than tell a story, communicate a range of feelings and open ended ideas.
2 - Create a piece of art that speaks to the name "Pretty Lights"  The name was originally intended to capture the essence of inspiration and speak to the nature of the artistic eye, so this video combines captivating imagery with beautiful lights in an organic and creative manner.
3-  To accomplish the first two things in a way that captures the attention of the viewer and does not let go. The element of precise synchronicity combined with quickly and creatively edited shots brings the video and music together in a way that unites the two like never before.
It truly is one piece of art.

The track was produced by Pretty Lights and was released as a single on Jan. 26th 2012.

It is the story of a visitor from another place, charged with delivering an enigmatic message; a wandering guardian, protecting a civilization that rejects the sun; and a being watching over it all, orchestrating its rhythms.

LETTER 22 is also the story of all of us, who have each, at one time or another, felt ourselves to be in possession of knowledge or insight that appears an innate, universal truth to us, but is callously dismissed by others. In such moments, it is easy to feel as though you truly are from a different planet, governed by a different sense of logic and order than this one, which used to feel so familiar.

However, in such moments we also find ourselves at a crossroads – a point in spacetime where we must choose to either succumb to these tribulations, or overcome them, and let those triumphs fuel the continued search for others who are also willing to open their eyes to another point of view.

Pretty Lights live in his home state, Colorado//  
PL played sets at The Fillmore in Denver, CO on 8-12-11 and at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on 8-13-11. 
RadioEditAV filmed the shows and edited this video to the track, produced by Pretty Lights.  The song is a PL version of a Led Zeppelin remix.  The track samples pieces of 7 Led Zeppelin tracks collaged together and then reflected thru a prism of Hip-Hop, Classic Rock, Downtempo, and Dubstep.

It has zero samples in it, as everything was self composed and recorded with several different bands he assembled, as well as many vocalists and emcees he recorded with.

Smith used recordings from the rehearsals leading up to Red Rocks to sample and produce the track.
 
"My dream has come true. I will be hitting the road for my 2013 fall tour with a FULL, AWESOME LIVE BAND!  We will be fusing new, hot production with the live band's gritty old school hip-hop soul break styles in a way that production and a live band have never been heard together before. The musicians that have come together for this manifestation of Pretty Lights are brilliant and so insanely talented. My world has grown from computers and live production to a full analog sound sculpting, band dubbing, bass playing, looping, synth and sample playing modular command center.  It is so much fun. The Pretty Lights show has evolved, drastically.  Red Rocks in August was the first live band show and we've been rehearsing ever since. Joining Smith on the fall tour will be drummer extraordinaire, Adam Deitch (Break Science), keyboardist Brian Coogan (New Orleans All-Star), keyboardist Borahm Lee (Break Science), Scott Flynn (John Brown's Body) on trombone and Eric Bloom (Lettuce) on trumpet. Deitch and Coogan both played extensively on Pretty Lights' latest album, A Color Map of the Sun, released in July.

Pretty Lights returns for the Soundship Spacesystem 2024 Check Your Vector Tour. The tour features 24 dates in 11 cities, inclusive of 3 festival appearances in the Summer and Fall of 2024.

• Artist Presale Tickets (GA + VIP) for newly announced shows will go on sale Wednesday May 15th at 10am MT
• General On Sale will begin Friday May 17th at 10am MT
