Alternative R&B artist Steve Lacy is in a presumably small class of musicians who have co-produced a Grammy-nominated album while still in high school. Foremost a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer, the musician joined <a href="spotify:artist:7GN9PivdemQRKjDt4z5Zv8">the Internet</a> in 2014 and made his recorded debut on the band's Ego Death (2015), which the Recording Academy nominated for Best Contemporary Urban Album. Lacy has since worked on his bandmates' assorted solo releases and outside the group has become a highly sought-after collaborator across genres. <a href="spotify:artist:6l3HvQ5sa6mXTsMTB19rO5">J. Cole</a>'s "Foldin Clothes," <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>'s "PRIDE.," <a href="spotify:artist:4V8LLVI7PbaPR0K2TGSxFF">Tyler, The Creator</a>'s "911/Mr. Lonely," and <a href="spotify:artist:5BvJzeQpmsdsFp4HGUYUEx">Vampire Weekend</a>'s "Sunflower" were among the highlights added to his songbook through the tail-end of the 2010s. He has also released lazing, heartfelt solo material, including the EP-length "song series" Steve Lacy's Demo (2017), the Grammy-nominated full-length Apollo XXI (2019), and the Grammy-winning Top Ten follow-up Gemini Rights (2022).

A native of Compton, California, Lacy became interested in the guitar while attending church. His mother obliged him by buying him his first instrument and lining up lessons. Befriended in high school jazz band by upperclassman Jameel Bruner, Lacy entered the orbit of <a href="spotify:artist:7GN9PivdemQRKjDt4z5Zv8">the Internet</a>, and in 2014 joined Bruner's band as they worked on their third studio LP. Using mobile device applications, he co-produced over half of the songs on Ego Death, released in June 2015. The album, which also featured Lacy's multi-instrumental work, entered the upper half of the Billboard 200 and was subsequently nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Urban Contemporary Album. During 2016, the year he finished high school, he began his self-termed "song series" with the funky, easygoing "C U Girl," and branched out with contributions to recordings by <a href="spotify:artist:6fxyWrfmjcbj5d12gXeiNV">Denzel Curry</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:1U1el3k54VvEUzo3ybLPlM">Kali Uchis</a>, as well as <a href="spotify:artist:5ZS223C6JyBfXasXxrRqOk">Jhené Aiko</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:0c173mlxpT3dSFRgMO8XPh">Big Sean</a>'s <a href="spotify:artist:6g8AmloI8egfrr3dm3SnUL">TWENTY88</a> project, and <a href="spotify:artist:6aaMZ3fcfLv4tEbmY7bjRM">Isaiah Rashad</a>. He also co-produced "Foldin Clothes" for <a href="spotify:artist:6l3HvQ5sa6mXTsMTB19rO5">J. Cole</a>'s Billboard 200-topping 4 Your Eyez Only.

Lacy was even more active throughout the next few years. <a href="spotify:artist:7GN9PivdemQRKjDt4z5Zv8">Internet</a> bandmates <a href="spotify:artist:7ycsWk9ae4pTAlWH8j6Hf9">Matt Martians</a> and Syd released Lacy-assisted solo sets during the first couple months of 2017. During the same period, Lacy issued Steve Lacy's Demo on the independent <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%223qtr%22">3qtr</a> label. By the end of that year, he co-produced and was featured on <a href="spotify:artist:5XenQ7XfcvQdfIbpLEFaKQ">GoldLink</a>'s "Some Girl," and co-produced <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>'s Top 40 entry "PRIDE." (off the Grammy-winning DAMN.) and <a href="spotify:artist:4V8LLVI7PbaPR0K2TGSxFF">Tyler, The Creator</a>'s "911/Mr. Lonely" (off the Grammy-nominated Flower Boy). Early the following year, he produced and co-wrote the entirety of <a href="spotify:artist:5RTLRtXjbXI2lSXc6jxlAz">Ravyn Lenae</a>'s Crush EP and contributed to <a href="spotify:artist:4LLpKhyESsyAXpc4laK94U">Mac Miller</a>'s Top Five hit Swimming, <a href="spotify:artist:1U1el3k54VvEUzo3ybLPlM">Kali Uchis</a>' Isolation, and <a href="spotify:artist:6LEeAFiJF8OuPx747e1wxR">Blood Orange</a>'s Negro Swan. That July, <a href="spotify:artist:7GN9PivdemQRKjDt4z5Zv8">the Internet</a>'s Hive Mind arrived with Lacy handling a heavier load of the band's production, songwriting, and playing duties -- guitar, co-production, and co-writing on all tracks, plus some co-lead and background vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, and drums on others. 

He made high-profile appearances in early 2019 on <a href="spotify:artist:2auiVi8sUZo17dLy1HwrTU">Solange</a>'s When I Get Home and the <a href="spotify:artist:5BvJzeQpmsdsFp4HGUYUEx">Vampire Weekend</a> single "Sunflower." That May, shortly after he appeared on <a href="spotify:artist:7ycsWk9ae4pTAlWH8j6Hf9">Martians</a>' The Last Party, Lacy released Apollo XXI, his first solo LP. It landed on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a 2020 Grammy. Also that year, he released the non-album single "Live Without Your Love" with <a href="spotify:artist:05KDKIpxshxrB9BMewaCBW">Love Regenerator</a>. As a producer and featured artist, Lacy was one of the key contributors to <a href="spotify:artist:5RTLRtXjbXI2lSXc6jxlAz">Ravyn Lenae</a>'s Hypnos, issued in May 2022. Two months later, he hit number seven on the Billboard 200 with his second full-length, and first through major-label <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22RCA%22">RCA</a>, Gemini Rights. Written in response to a breakup, the album sported a richer sound with assistance from the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:5BozIJTTNCufaZpjhy2der">DJ Dahi</a>, Ely Rise, <a href="spotify:artist:7FQiZr787umw7P5dO3zqld">John Carroll Kirby</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:1nlwJ38qAy8llUQSCXN6D7">Fousheé</a>, Lacy's duet partner on "Sunshine." This means, you have to "make it" before people can truly understand what you're GONNA MAKE.  We learned a lot from shooting this episode.   Frankly... we got better the more we worked on it.  As we got closer to the PBS TV version of the show (check you local listings for times), we changed quite a few things, but I think this episode stands up.  Remember... this is kinda-like a FIRST DRAFT... so keep that in mind when watching.  What's the difference between a renewable and non-renewable resource? In the latest episode of STEVE TRASH SCIENCE... we break it down for you in FUN and FUNNY ways!  What makes a resource renewable?  Is the SUN renewable?  What makes a resource non-renewable?  How fast can Steve disappear into an ikky-fake-video-swamp?  In this short 13 minute long video we answer all these burning questions of science.  STEAM and STEM correlated, this video is fun and funny.  Primarily focused on grades 1-5, this video was created to supplement "in classroom" resource learning.

Renewable vs Non-Renewable Resources  - Educational Video for Kids

This illusion is sometimes called the MINI KUB ZAG or the Mini Cube Zag.  I like to call it THE MAGICAL RECYCLER.  We shot this waaaay back in 2010 in front of a live audience and the illusion has been updated and made much cleaner and much faster.  Having said that, I still looks pretty cool.  The theme we've adopted is simple.  Recycling is the process of taking any OLD resource and making it NEW again.  So that's exactly what we set out to do with Lourie's dress... make the old dress new again.  This is fun.  Give it a watch!  This video is several years old and we've recently updated this illusion again.  Now it's even faster and more visual.

Reduce Reuse Recycle - DRAFT VERSION  - Pollution - Conservation - Educational Video for Kids

Hi.  I'm Steve Trash®.  I'm a professional eco-entertainer.  For over 30 years I've created amazing magic tricks that teach kids about recycling, ecology, the environment... mostly... making less trash.  This is my - NEW - kids tv magic show.  It's old school.  We shot it in a TV studio with a live audience of kids and grownups.  That was a lot of fun.  Trash TV® is  TOTALLY filled with magic, music, and (for lack of a better description) recycling mayhem!  I LOVE recycling... so Recycling Mayhem sounds pretty cool to me and that's EXACTLY what this show is... cool!   Watch TRASH TV and you get to see... a Cheerio MAGICALLY LINK to another Cheerio, you'll see a woman (Bethany) get magically recycled (along with her old dress) and you'll even see a kid float in the air.  No kidding... that kid floats... right in front of a LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE.

Truly amazing magic performed by Steve Trash  for kids - TRASH TV®

The Magical Recycler by Steve Trash®

So... I was doing shows yesterday at the University of Alabama - Huntsville - and a young lady asked... "do you do the Floss Dance?"  So I said, "I'm sorry... I don't even know what that is."  She proceeded to show me.  I LOVED it.  So... we got everyone in the audience to do it.  Cool right?  I'm still practicing.

My friend Rob (who works as MELVIN - THE WACKY WHEELER in parades and fairgrounds) has known Dr. Evermor for years.  Every time we got together for a show, Rob would say to me, "we should go see Dr. Evermor".   I'd say, "sounds cool".  But for at least 7 or 8 years, we never seemed to find the time.  Well last summer we were BOTH working the Wisconsin State Fair and we both found the time.    Dr. Evermor's Art Park is was one of the most amazing places I've ever been in my life.  He was an industrial scrap guy that began building fantastical creatures out of his scrap and it grew into this magical sculpture garden that's really difficult to describe.   I put together some of my photos into a slide show to give you an idea.  The guy is a genius.

I know.  I know.  It's goofy and silly, (and yes... I'm wearing a bathrobe backwards and a towel on my head), but I'm willing to look silly when it's something I believe in.  In this case, it's solar power.  Sun Juice is about using the renewable and sustainable energy of the sun to power our activities in sustainable ways.  Sun Juice - this music video - is about the abundant renewable energy that ends up on the surface of the earth every single day.  I get excited when I think about this clean, green, energy.  I live in Frog Pond Alabama - population 76 when I'm not home - and we have a Ten K Solar array that captures energy from the sun.  That energy is then transformed into electricity that my home and digital production studio can use.  It's pretty cool.  In the song, I sing "Sun Juice it's for free..."  That's pretty much true.  When you buy and set up the solar Photovoltaic Array and a DC to AC converter (which is pretty expensive) from then on... every time the sun shines... you're making clean, green, power.  Compare this to any other form of getting electricity.  Each time you need electricity you have to pay for it.  With my system... if the sun shines... I'm making power.  Pretty cool right?

It features all new music, new magic, new explanations and a new Garbage Monster. Garbage Monster? Yes. Garbage Monster! And lots of new funny stuff. Itʼs a whole new show with the same ecological theme but different content! Woohoo. 

This show has almost exactly the same technical requirements as The Science of Ecology. Itʼs a one man/solo show, suitable for 500 - 1500 seat performing arts theatres. Itʼs a terrific eco-educational show that's specifically tailored to the school audience. 

Steveʼs shows are always an excellent blend of curriculum based ecological lessons (with lesson plans), awesome green themed magic tricks, music and craziness that kids find irresistible.

This music video requires a little song background.  So here it is.   We humans consistently use the planets’ resources in very unsustainable ways.   It's true. We actually build mountains out of our waste.   We build "real life" mountains of garbage.   To make matters worse, this stuff  just sits there wasting away and in some cases it leaches toxic goo (battery acid, heavy metals, hazardous chemicals... come to mind) into our ground water.  As you can imagine, that is not very good.  I wrote this song about just such a mountain of trash.  The mountain that inspired it sits along Highway 43, but there are mountains just like it all over the world.   We humans need to start working WITH nature rather than against it. One of the smartest ways to do this is to reduce, reuse, recycle.  Reduce what you can.  Reuse what you can.  Recycle everything that's left over .  Lots of things can be recycled and it’s simply doesn’t make sense (economic or ecologic) to not use this stuff again.  Recycling is smart.  So, please recycle.  

A little music video background - By the way, I live in beautiful Frog Pond, Alabama and have a wonderful little production studio (which is powered by energy from the sun on non-cloudy days).  Our team decided the best way to illustrate this song was to create a shadow puppet show.  For a shadow puppet show, you need a puppet theater.  That’s basically a frame with paper and a strong source of light behind.  The cool thing is… I was able to recycle pieces of an old magic show illusion called The Shadow Box.  It worked perfectly.  The Art Goddess and Robert and I cut out LOTS of shadow puppets (from recycled file folders) and attached wire coat hangers to them (also recycled).  It was a fun days shoot.
