Chief Cleopatra, born Jalesa Jessie, is an Austin, Texas based soul-rock singer, songwriter and musician. 
Originally from Corsicana, Texas, Cleo began her musical journey as a young child, singing and playing drums in her church’s youth choir, and eventually beginning to write her own songs. After briefly stepping away from music, Cleo moved to Austin and released the debut acoustic EP, Lesa x Lenny Vol.1, in February 2019, kicking off her professional musical career. She was quickly noticed by and featured in the Austin Chronicle, and on KUTX, performing on the station’s show, The Breaks in 2020 and becoming their February Artist of The Month in 2022.
Garnering praise and prompting comparisons to Santigold. Chief Cleopatra reigns as a 5X SXSW official artist, she was nominated by the Austin Music Awards for “Best New Artist” in 2021, she is a member of the Recording Academy and was previously in consideration for the 66th Annual GRAMMYs®, with a total of four categories including Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Alternative Music Performance for her 2023 single, “Weekend Warrior”.
Cleo has supported The Wailers, Girl Talk, Durand Jones, Adrian Quesada, Bryson Tiller, Bas, The Bright Light Social Hour, Jackie Venson, Seratones, Abraham Alexander, Danielle Ponder, Lukas Nelson along with many other notable acts.
Her junior EP, Cold Dancer, is slated for release 2024.

I am Egyptian, A COPTIC CHRISTIAN EGYPTIAN. I shout that out loud because we are the most pure blooded Egyptians out there and that&#39;s not only my opinion that&#39;s what Egyptologists, Historians and Scientists also agreed on,  and I tell you that every word that Bassem Youssef said is right and I totally agree with him. Yes Egypt had lots of mixed cultures throughout its history like for example: Assyrians, Persians, Israelites, Nubians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs, but the Egyptian blood didn&#39;t mix and change that much and that&#39;s because for centuries we Egyptians had a golden tradition rule to marry our cousins, and that tradition is still present until now especially in Upper Egypt(from Assiut to Aswan), Although that tradition seems silly and bad from a scientific biological point of view, but that doesn&#39;t matter, silly or not we kept that tradition of marrying our cousins for centuries and that helped us to preserve our pure Egyptian blood not mixed as long as we could, and the result is what you see now and that is Modern Egyptians looks typical to their Ancient Egyptian Ancestors, just look at my skin color and Bassem Youssef&#39;s skin color we are almost the same although he is a Muslim who was born and lived in Cairo and I am a Coptic Christian who was born and lived in Luxor and there is almost a 1000 km distance between us, doesn&#39;t that tell you a thing or two about who Ancient Egyptians were and what they looked like? With all due respect for all the Black people and all the other ethnicities out there, but we Egyptians are special very special, WE ARE NOT Black or White or Yellow, Not Europeans or Africans or Asians, Not Assyrians or Persians or Israelites or Nubians or Greeks or Romans or Arabs or French or Italians or Germans or British or Turkish or Ukrainians, Not Middle Easterners or Caucasians or Mediterraneans or Levants or Amazigh or Berbers or even North Africans. WE ARE EGYPTIANS,  WE ARE VERY UNIQUE!

Heartbreakingly relatable yet buoyant and upbeat, Austin-based artist Chief Cleopatra’s latest bop, “Friends,” is a bittersweet goodbye. Cleo’s wistful vocals weave into dancy synth grooves seamlessly, just as she winds through the various tableaus of Austin’s vibrant SoCo district on a bright winter day in the song’s laid-back, deceptively simple long-take music video.
“I wrote ‘Friends’ back in 2013 while living in San Marcos, TX. I had access to this really cool keyboard that my ex let me use, and I would sit there for hours and just work on my craft of composing and storytelling. That was a really creative time for me, I wrote a lot of songs in that space, and ‘Friends’ was a special one that stuck with me.

The song was inspired by a friendship I had for 10+ years, and at some point, this person just up and left me. They had no remorse about it either, and that truly hurt me at the time. I feel like everyone has had that type of relationship at one point or another that can really make you question loyalty.

Being able to write about my own experiences is, in a way, my own self-therapy. Sometimes the vibe is happy, sometimes sad, but it’s all healing.”

About Chief Cleopatra:
Raised in Corsicana, Texas on a steady diet of gospel, it didn’t take long for Jalesa Jessie, aka Chief Cleopatra, to veer off the beaten path thanks to a serendipitous viewing of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” video at the impressionable age of eight. From that point on there was no looking back for the multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter as she built a foundation of soul, funk, pop and hip-hop influences ranging from fellow gospel devotee Aretha Franklin to galactic partygoers Parliament-Funkadelic to the grimy rap of Wu-Tang Clan.

Initially drawn to piano, which activated her ability to play by ear, Jessie found a more natural home with the drumline of marching band. That passion for all things percussive led to Jessie’s mom gifting her a drumset when she was 13 and encouraging her to brush up on legends like Sheila E. and John Bonham. Before long Jessie was playing in everything from the church band to her school friends’ various musical endeavors.

Lured out to Austin in 2012 by the promise of better musical opportunities, Jessie connected with Leonard Martinez through mutual friends, and the two soon began collaborating. They dabbled in a number of projects and bands together over the next few years, and in February 2019, they released their first EP together, Lesa x Lenny Vol.1, under Jessie’s new moniker, Chief Cleopatra.

The band was quickly noticed by and featured in the Austin Chronicle, as well as by KUTX, performing on the station’s popular hip-hop and R&B show The Breaks in 2019, resulting in the band being invited to play the third annual Summer Jam in 2020. Chief Cleopatra released her critically acclaimed eponymous EP that year as well, alongside music videos for “Gangstas in Love” and “Belushi.”

In Spring of 2021, Chief Cleopatra released her first single and video “Friends” from her forthcoming EP, Luna, garnering praise for the jaunty synth-led indie pop sound, which prompted comparison to Santigold. That year, Cleopatra was selected as an official showcasing artist at South by Southwest, before headlining Austin festival Hot Summer Nights in August 2021

Cleopatra’s new sonic direction echoes fellow pop experimenters Blood Orange and Thundercat, with the playful instrumentation framing the sultry, soulful, and subtly-powerful style she showcased on her 2020 Chief Cleopatra EP. Luna will find Cleo delving deeper into those psychedelic soul roots and more experimental instrumentation, with featured production by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Walker Lukens and performances by Curtis Roush and Jack O’Brien (The Bright Light Social Hour).

About Chief Cleopatra:

Chief Cleopatra, born Jalesa Jessie, is an Austin, Texas-based soul rock singer and songwriter. Originally from Corsicana, Texas, Cleo began her musical journey as a child, singing in her church’s youth choir, and eventually beginning to write her own songs. After briefly stepping away from music, Cleo moved to Austin and released her debut EP, Lesa x Lenny Vol.1, in February 2019, kicking off her professional musical career. She was quickly noticed by and featured in the Austin Chronicle, and on KUTX, performing on the show The Breaks in 2019, and in their third annual Summer Jam in 2020. Cleo was also scheduled to perform an official showcase at SXSW 2020 until the fest was canceled.

Fans of Santigold, Blood Orange, and Thundercat will find echoes of their influence in Chief Cleopatra’s sultry, soulful, and subtly-powerful style which she begins to fine-tune in her 2020 Chief Cleopatra EP. 

Her forthcoming EP, Luna, will find Cleo delving deeper into those psychedelic soul roots and more experimental instrumentation, with featured performances by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Walker Lukens and by Curtis Roush and Jack O’Brien of The Bright Light Social Hour.

About Belushi:
“I actually wrote Belushi back in 2014. I was tired of the same annoying, ambitionless, commercial, cookie-cutter music that was being accepted into the mainstream. I was gripped with a deep desire to just wash it out of existence, stand up for the true essence of music... start a revolution.
I released the song in early 2020, racial and social injustice still alarming as ever, and found the song taking on whole different meanings, but the message remaining the same. If anything, it has more purpose, power, and relevance now than when I first wrote it, and that shows how desperately necessary change really is." - Chief Cleopatra
