Analogous to mixtape kingpins <a href="spotify:artist:3q7HBObVc0L8jNeTe5Gofh">50 Cent</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:0mbgkaYR8KNUb5s3s1yYHG">Papoose</a>, Saigon rose to prominence within hip-hop's top ranks, particularly in New York, on unofficial singles and mixtapes alone. Politically conscious and street-smart, the rapper became a formidable force when he was taken under the wing of <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Roc-A-Fella+Records%22">Roc-A-Fella Records</a>' in-demand producer <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Just Blaze</a>, who shared his passion for early-'90s hip-hop.

Born in Brooklyn but raised in Rockland County, New York, Saigon (aka Brian Carenard) developed his deft rhyming skills during his seven-year stint in prison, where he also earned the nickname "The Yardfather." Still a teenager, he spent much of his time delving into politics and Black history, educating himself on topics like the Vietnam War and Toussaint L'Ouverture, but he identified primarily with the history and background of <a href="spotify:artist:2IsulP0BplLNJn8BGsvUQo">Malcolm X</a>. After his prison release in 2000, he established the company <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Abandoned+Nation%22">Abandoned Nation</a>, which was partly a nonprofit foundation to provide support for the children of incarcerated parents, but also helped him and associated artists to pursue their music careers. His first important musical contact was DJ/producer <a href="spotify:artist:3hv9jJF3adDNsBSIQDqcjp">Mark Ronson</a>, who gave him studio time and access to other valuable contacts. The rapper later left <a href="spotify:artist:3hv9jJF3adDNsBSIQDqcjp">Ronson</a>'s company, on good terms, in order to explore better options.

Saigon began producing mixtapes in 2002. It didn't take the raw lyricist much time to gain a sizable fan base with songs like the political "Shok TV," the street gang-focusing "The Color Purple," and the alliterating exercise of "The Letter P," one of his first tracks with <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Just Blaze</a>. <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Blaze</a> was looking for an atypical rapper with whom he could start his new Fort Knocks imprint, and after hearing Saigon, he signed him almost immediately. To say Saigon became just a promising up-and-comer is an understatement. Saigon was listed on tons of "Artists to Watch" lists (including Time magazine's) and graced the covers of many hip-hop publications throughout the early to mid-2000s. His songs found their way onto the mixtapes of many reputable DJs, like <a href="spotify:artist:1giPduZUUFru23D2icr2A8">DJ Kay Slay</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:75rSoy9VvZ5fhmAE2O4KL5">DJ Whookid</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:5oNgAs7j5XcBMzWv3HAnHG">DJ Drama</a>. Meanwhile, his own mixtapes, including the Yardfather volumes and Warning Shots (2004), sold very well. By 2005, he was signed to <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Blaze</a>'s imprint under <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Atlantic+Records%22">Atlantic Records</a> and had landed a recurring role in the HBO hit series Entourage. However, his official <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Atlantic%22">Atlantic</a> debut album was constantly delayed, causing his buzz in the industry to subside slightly, but still leaving many in anticipation.

Just months after signing, Saigon began working to obtain his release from <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Atlantic%22">Atlantic</a>, claiming artistic differences, and even announced his retirement in 2007; finally, he was released from the label in 2008. Although very little official material emerged -- just a few singles -- he released mixtapes and other unofficial albums prolifically, including two further volumes of his Warning Shots series (which had debuted in 2004). Finally, in 2011, Saigon released his first official album, The Greatest Story Never Told, on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Suburban+Noize+Records%22">Suburban Noize Records</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Just Blaze</a>'s Fort Knocks. Produced primarily by <a href="spotify:artist:2gpPCu8rjzdobGqDZJpHiR">Just Blaze</a>, the album earned strong reviews. ~ Cyril Cordor, Rovi

Over the recent National Holiday weekend - instead of heading out of town like everyone else, I decided to stay in Saigon to enjoy the low key vibe and hang out in one of my favorite neighborhoods. So I booked a one night stay at the Wink Hotel. I recommend this hotel for travelers who seek comfort, quality, and value for money. It's the first LEED Gold certified hotel in Vietnam so for those who value sustainability will appreciate staying here. The only downsize is that the rooms are 18sqm - smaller than I would like. And there is no outdoor swimming pool area to lounge for R&R. But it's designed as a city hotel so it's for people who are on the go or coming to the city on a business trip.

If you're a tourist to Bangkok, you'll probably be doing a lot of walking or being on your feet most of the day. I normally either break up my day by having a foot massage in the afternoon or at the end of the day to give my feet a break. #bangkok #thaimassage #bangkoktraveltips 

I had my foot massage at the Asia Herb Association. They have several branches around Sukhumvit Road. A foot massage is so much more than just your feet. They also give you a shoulder, neck, head, and back massage at the end so you'll feel like you had a full body massage! A foot massage is ideal for someone who doesn't want to have to undress or doesn't want oil on their body. They apply pressure points to your feet but you'll benefit throughout your body. When in Thailand - make sure you allocate time for a massage!!!

I had a chance to talk to Ms. Mai from DTC Responsible Travel in Hanoi. She shares local insights of what to expect in Hanoi during this time. Although it may sound dismal with businesses being closed for a week, in actuality, there will be some restaurants and cafes in the tourist area open from Tet (January 22). Many businesses will start to re-open from January 26th (4th day of Lunar New Year). The day where most places start shutting down is on the eve of Tet (January 21st). This is the day where you should really stock up on food and necessities since locals need to attend to their family duties of preparing for Tet.

September 2nd is Vietnam's National Day. This year it falls on a long weekend so people have more free time for leisure activities. The hot air balloon replaces the annual firework show. This event started at 8am and you can see thousands of people down at Bach Dang Wharf waiting to see the hot air balloons go up and lift the giant flag. While waiting there were paragliders and boat rowers waving the flag. #walkingsaigon  #hochiminhcity  #crossingthestreet

It was the first time the city hosted this event. It was pretty uneventful because I think they had problems lifting the flag. And there were only 8 hot air balloons. LOL. I was expecting a couple dozen like most hot air balloon shows. Anyway, it was fun to see the crowds and be a part of the atmosphere. But it was sure HOT!!!

This was a surprising delicious banh mi in Nha Trang!  I love how all the ingredients are homemade. Many other places use ham and bologna in their banh mi and we all know by now how carcinogenic that is! 

If you’re ever in Nha Trang, make sure you try this banh mi. There’s usually a long line of Korean tourist but depending on how hungry you are - it is worth the wait!
