Singer Mickey Guyton is a Black female country artist with a warm, textured voice whose sound walks the line between classic country and contemporary pop. Following her initial buzz when her 2015 debut single, "Better Than You Left Me," began making its way up the radio airplay charts, Guyton gained yet wider attention when her song "Black Like Me" went viral in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. It also earned a Grammy nomination, making her the first Black female artist nominated for Best Country Solo Performance. With the release of her full-length debut, 2021's Remember Her Name, Guyton also became the first Black artist to earn a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. She has continued to marry twangy hooks with heartfelt sentiments as on 2022's gospel-inflected "I Still Pray" and her romantic 2023 collaboration with <a href="spotify:artist:3oSJ7TBVCWMDMiYjXNiCKE">Kane Brown</a> "Nothing Compares to You."

Born Candace Mycale Guyton in 1983 in Arlington, Texas, Guyton spent much of her childhood moving with her family as her father pursued his career in engineering. Music, however, was a constant for the burgeoning performer, who first began singing with her church choir at age five. Growing up, Guyton listened to a genre-crossing blend of music, including country stars <a href="spotify:artist:32vWCbZh0xZ4o9gkz4PsEU">Dolly Parton</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2d3VHzlOEwXvmBdS4pzOPL">LeAnn Rimes</a>, gospel artists <a href="spotify:artist:3WNUkxJcJeliFx9KXWXMgs">BeBe & CeCe Winans</a>, and pop/R&B icon <a href="spotify:artist:6XpaIBNiVzIetEPCWDvAFP">Whitney Houston</a>. She developed a flexible vocal style, and after high school moved to California, where she enrolled at Santa Monica College and began pursuing a music career. Following several years of working day jobs and performing, Guyton met Julian Raymond, an experienced producer who believed in her potential. Raymond introduced her to managers Gary Borman and Steve Moir, whose clients included <a href="spotify:artist:0u2FHSq3ln94y5Q57xazwf">Keith Urban</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:25NQNriVT2YbSW80ILRWJa">Faith Hill</a>. 

With the support of her management team, Guyton moved to Nashville and quickly became a presence in the city's vibrant musical community. In 2011, she performed as part of a special concert at the White House, where she shared the bill with <a href="spotify:artist:0zlJDQgqnr9AocrH9gs1Es">Lyle Lovett</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0vn7UBvSQECKJm2817Yf1P">James Taylor</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:7x8nK0m0cP2ksQf0mjWdPS">Dierks Bentley</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:7FY5V3XMwlNBPitEjXowHQ">Darius Rucker</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:0vYQRW5LIDeYQOccTviQNX">Kris Kristofferson</a>. She also signed a deal with <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Liberty%22">Liberty</a>/<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Capitol+Nashville%22">Capitol Nashville</a>, and in 2012 received a standing ovation when she performed her song "Better Than You Left Me" at Nashville's Country Radio Seminar. The song became Guyton's debut single for <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Liberty%22">Liberty</a>, appearing on her eponymous 2015 EP Mickey Guyton; it eventually peaked at 34 on Billboard's Country Airplay, earning her the music industry bible's stamp as one of "10 Hot Country Artists to Watch in 2015." Guyton's follow-up, "Heartbreak Song," went to 45 on the same chart in 2016. More singles arrived in 2019, including "Hold On" (taken from the film Breakthrough), "Sister," and "Crazy." 

In the spring of 2020, Guyton released the empowering, socially conscious ballad "What Are you Gonna Tell Her?" as the first single off her third EP, Bridges. On the heels of the record's release, she became the first Black female artist to perform her own song at the ACM Awards ceremony when she joined <a href="spotify:artist:0u2FHSq3ln94y5Q57xazwf">Keith Urban</a> for "What Are You Gonna Tell Her?" Another song off her EP, "Black Like Me," gained viral attention in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance, making Guyton the first Black female artist to earn the nomination.

Both "Black Like Me" and "What Are You Gonna Tell Her?" were included on Guyton's long-awaited full-length debut, Remember Her Name, which arrived in September 2021 reaching number 47 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. It also picked up several Grammy nominations, including for Best Country Album, making Guyton the first Black artist to earn a Grammy nomination in that category. In August 2022, she returned with the twangy, upbeat single "Somethin' Bout You," followed that November by the gospel-infused "I Still Pray." She also paired with <a href="spotify:artist:3oSJ7TBVCWMDMiYjXNiCKE">Kane Brown</a> for the romantic 2023 duet "Nothing Compares to You." ~ Matt Collar

IN TEARS!!! Only black girl, growing up in rural Missouri in an all white school. I stayed away from most country music because it resembled the hate that I endured back then. WOW! Times have changed. I have never seen anything like this! I may have to open my mind to it now!

I am 36 years old crying like a baby…cause I resonated with this song so much. Growing up in the south, in East Tennessee was not always easy being a person of mixed decent. My momma tried to do my hair but she didn’t really now how too…so she would pay people to do my hair in return. But I do remember there was a time I hated anything that was black about me like my hair, my nose an etc due to bullies calling me Medusa. But then I grew to love myself although it took a long time, I eventually I got there. This song means a lot not to just me but to many people like me and I’m thankful for this song. I love country music and I’m so happy to see changes within country music itself. As well as, seeing CMT making effort in contributing to change makes my heart so happy!

"Love My Hair" is probably the most special song on the album to me. I wrote it after watching a video of a little girl getting sent home from school because her hair was too distracting. It brought up all of my own insecurities that I still struggle with to this day. My entire being has changed since I had a baby, including my hair, so this song is still a reminder to myself to love the skin I’m in.  To that little girl, and anyone facing similar struggles, you are seen and you are loved. ❤️

Throwback to singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl two years ago!

Patsy Cline recorded "Crazy" in 1961 at Nashville’s legendary Quonset Hut Studio B.  This was filmed in the same studio.  Singing in the same space where Patsy Cline recorded "Crazy" was so very special. I did my very best to pay homage to a woman that paved a way for us all.
