Rapper Ras Kass was born John Austin IV in Watts, California but grew up in Carson. A voracious reader throughout his youth, he adopted his stage name in honor of Ethiopian emperor Ras Kassa Mercha. 
 
He’s worked with some of the Greatest artists and producers from Dr Dre, Dj Premier, KRS1, The Rza, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and more 
 
After releasing a pair of independent singles, Ras Kass emerged as one of the most highly regarded new rappers at the time, winning particular acclaim for his skills as a lyricist (in the space of six months, he twice earned Rap Pages magazine&#39;s Rhyme of the Month award as well as 2 The Source&#39;s Hip Hop Quotable honor). His long-awaited debut LP, Soul on Ice, arrived on spotify:search:label%3A%22Priority+Records%22 in 1996. The album is considered a classic for seven-minute history lesson &quot;Nature of the Threat,&quot;
His sophomore effort, Rasassination (spotify:search:label%3A%22PatchWerk%22 /spotify:search:label%3A%22Priority%22 ), followed in 1998, landing in the Top 100 on the Billboard 200 The release of his follow-up, Van Gogh, was delayed by label mergers and bootlegging which shelved the project. The next lP; Goldyn Chyld, also failed to materialize. HRSMN, a rap supergroup formed with <a href="spotify:artist:6NyJIFHAePjHR1pFxwisqz" data-name="Kurupt">Kurupt</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0JYmatsiEQMn2v5KchV8u2" data-name="Killah Priest">Killah Priest</a>, and Canibus was leaked in 2003. Still while incarcerated &amp; still embroiled in label disagreements.

Hi everyone.  "Soul on Ice 2" Ras Kass movement in making independent hip hop history and only at 9% funding. Please continue to help spread the word & movement, it is going to take all of us together to reach the goal. 

 A MESSAGE FROM RAS KASS:


Keith Murray always said "Ras, you're 10 years ahead of your time!". I think I'm probably closer to 20 years ahead. Soul On Ice (1996) is known critically acclaimed as a hip hop classic, but sadly mostly only "after-the-fact". I was a vanguard. I spoke on class-ism, racism, sexism, world historical, social commentary with witticism and facts. I spoke about secret societies (Illuminati) in '95 and still managed to spit unparalleled cipher-worthy lyrics as a west coast MC; things now attributed to newer artists and rewarded by the mainstream music industry. 

So why should people care about the making of Soul On Ice 2? Because 20 years later it is JUST AS RELEVANT AS IT WAS THE DAY IT WAS RELEASED in 1996! Only now are some people realizing how much they've slept.  Don't make the same mistake twice when I release this 2-part album SOI2. This promises to be just as dope! SOI 2 will provide the entire story behind my first album including songs and tracks that did not make the original album. Your contribution will help make hip hop history.

Soul On Ice 2 Project Summary:

To celebrate the 20th anniversary (1996) of the critically acclaimed album Soul on Ice, Ras Kass is currently completing an ambitious Trilogy with two new releases planned in 2016. The prequel, Intellectual Property (IP) will be released June, 2016.  

Intellectual Property (IP) is nearly completed (tracklist forthcoming soon) with features & production including KRS1, Bun B, Statik Selektah, Apollo Brown, OC, AFRO, Kurupt, Snow Goons, Killa Priest, Apathy, and others. Soul On Ice 2 is slated for release in December 2016.  Partly consisting of previously unreleased vintage 1995 recordings and audio, rare remixes,  some remixes from legendary hip hop producers, and brand new tracks inspired by SOI;  already completed tracks include features & production from artists such as Diamond D, Immortal Technique, V. Bozeman, K-Rino, Apollo Brown, Alchemist, Vinnie Paz, Styles P, MOP, Faith Evans, and more. We are fundraising with the goal of adding other stellar artists such as:  DJ Premier,The Rza, Anderson Paak, Justice League, Mos Def, L’Orange, and Thundercat.
