Born and raised in small Texas towns, the members of Good Looks met and began playing together in Austin. Songwriter Tyler Jordan grew up in a South Texas coastal town dominated by the petrochemical industry, his childhood steeped in the tension between nature and industry, exploitation abundantly present and the wealth gap on full display. His father’s church, described by Tyler as “cult-like in its intensity,” was homebase and where he learned to sing. Tyler eventually met lead guitarist Jake Ames in the late-night song-swap circles of the Kerrville Folk Festival campground (where they would also meet Buck Meek and Adrianne Lenker pre-Big Thief). They shared their mutual love of the Texas hill country canon (Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt, and Willie Nelson), a love of cheap diner food, thrift store baseball caps, and a healthy dose of harmless shit-talking. They began playing in bands together, backing up other songwriters and taking turns in the spotlight. They sought out producer Dan Duszynski (Loma, Cross Record, Jess Williamson) to engineer their debut album. What would form was Good Looks, a blue-collar political indie-rock band with healthy doses of Replacements swagger and shimmering, desert rock riffs not unlike The War On Drugs.

Good Looks write kindhearted and cathartic rock songs about the persistence required to make it through hard times. In April 2022, the Austin, Texas quartet released their critically acclaimed debut Bummer Year, which channeled post-2016 frustrations into lyrically generous and biting tracks. However, immediately after their triumphant hometown record release show, tragedy struck. Walking outside the venue, lead guitarist Jake Ames was hit by a car crossing the street, fracturing his skull and tailbone. Following a necessary period of healing and processing which found him in the ICU and dealing with short-term memory issues, Ames recovered. The traumatic accident strengthened their bond, which is evident on Lived Here For A While. It’s fearlessly direct music that captures the full-throated intensity of their galvanizing live show.

we did this at @thenervoussquirrels house in his groundwater thingy. twas fun! it was just a bit of a what if  we did this kinda thing! nervous squirrel did mention he might put an xlr snake up to it for future funsies. but who knows!

Take an impulse response of the well, then you can make a convolution reverb of it to use on anything.

This reminds me of this art project that I used to use for samples all the time.   This artist put speakers and microphones in this abandoned, factory, silo system somewhere in Canada.  It was called, &quot;Silophone&quot;.  It was literally a livestream from the microphone that he set up in there.   On the website, there was this HUGE list of audio samples that you could click on, and it would play them into the silo system, which was this HUGE, insane, echo chamber where the echoes went on almost forever.  You could also upload your own samples, adding them to the list, and play them into the thing as well.  And everyone was uploading everything from snippets of music, dialog from TV shows, and movies, their own voice,  sound effects, etc...  In addition to that, at the physical location, he had a microphone and speaker system set up in a shack at the physical location, outside the abandoned factory.  People who could actually get there, could go into the shack, and say things into the microphone, and hear it inside the silos.   The live-stream when you clicked on it was this amazing mish-mash of super-echoed audio of all kinds of craziness.  I loved just turning it on and listening to it for hours.  It would often overlap sound samples, and play some a couple seconds after it played the first ones.  I think it could play like four samples at roughly the same time.  I uploaded and played so many sounds through it.  I used to make all kinds of rhythm tracks with a synth, drum machine, combo that ran through every effect pedal I had, and then I would upload them, just to hear what they sounded like through the silo system, along with all the other craziness that people were running through the thing.  I remember spending hours recording audio from that live stream for sampling so many times.   Sadly, the project isn&#39;t running any more.   I still have those recordings of the thing in action from back then, though, somewhere.   If anyone lives in Montreal, I would love to know if this thing still exists and if it&#39;s still functional.

For those who are confused I believe it’s an aquifer well for ground water. Also,UK wells aren’t generally maintained so they can be dirty. 😁 Happy new year everyone

I programmed a digital synth that played a 30 oscillator drone, and then a 10,000 oscillator drone. Took 5 minutes to code. Both of them were Saw waves With 17 cents random detune and random Phase on all of the oscillators. I could not tell the difference between the different drones. More than about 10 or 20 oscs is overkill in my experience. But since it’s analog, it’s just gonna sound really cool. It’s really impressive that you built all those vcos.

Oh, yeah!!!! When you brought it fully online I spontaneously applauded! Brilliant work.
