With her warm voice and sincere stage presence, singer Maddie Poppe rose to fame as the winning contestant on the 16th season of American Idol. An Iowa native, Poppe grew up singing with her father, a guitarist, and by her teens was writing her own songs. Balancing a love of singer/songwriter pop with a little bit of country and folk, she built a loyal fan base playing festivals around Iowa. A failed audition for The Voice in 2015 left her time to record an independent debut album. From there, she made it onto American Idol in 2018, where she excelled, even playing one of her own original songs during the show's finale. Crowned the winner, she hit the charts with her coronation single, "Going Going Gone."

Born Madeline Mae Poppe on December 5, 1997 in Clarksville, Iowa, Maddie Poppe grew up in a musical family with a father who played guitar and performed in bands. After learning guitar, she gained early performance experience playing in her dad's band. She and her sister would also join their father every year in recording a Christmas album to send to their grandparents. Along with singing and playing the guitar, over the years she also learned to play piano and ukulele. After high school, Poppe attended both Iowa Central Community College and Waterloo, Iowa's Hawkeye Community College, where she studied digital mass media. While there, she continued to pursue her musical interests, writing her own songs and playing live. In 2015, she auditioned for The Voice, but did not make the cut. Undeterred, she released Songs from the Basement, an independent album recorded with her father in her basement, and issued the following year. 

In 2018, Poppe auditioned for the 16th season of American Idol, making it through to the first round with her rendition of "The Rainbow Connection." A fan favorite, she did well throughout the competition, even singing her original song "Don't Ever Let Your Children Grow Up" during the show's finale episode. On May 21, 2018, Poppe was named the winner of American Idol, beating out <a href="spotify:artist:1Ep9lOZuPcClsgR25odHK6">Caleb Lee Hutchinson</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:6Iz3eq2aQGFf7TbGT2iahL">Gabby Barrett</a>. Following the ceremony, she released her coronation single, "Going Going Gone," which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Digital Songs chart. Her proper debut, the studio album Whirlwind, arrived in May of 2019. Maddie Poppe went through all kinds of emotions — from elation to self-doubt — after winning American Idol in 2018, releasing her debut album Whirlwind the following year, and then ultimately watching in amazement as many of the people in her creative orbit dropped away.
The Iowa native, who captured the attention of fans with her folksy singer-songwriter style, did exactly that by giving herself the grace to evolve.
Hand-in-hand with her American Idol victory, she won a People’s Choice Award for her turn on the show, had Whirlwind hit Number 2 on the iTunes Pop Charts, and went on to become a hot guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Live With Kelly & Ryan and Good Morning America. All of this in addition to touring the country opening for Ingrid Michaelson and headlining her own tours, including a Christmas run that has become a seasonal “must” for Maddie’s fans.

Maddie- Two summers ago, I was sitting in my living room in Waverly (lived close to the river) and heard someone with a phenomenal voice singing in the concert in the park. My boyfriend and I grabbed our lawn chairs and rushed to the amphitheater to listen to you perform. I recognized not your name but your talent, and I have been a fan ever since. Best of luck on Idol. I&#39;ve always been the only kid who never really wanted to grow up, being an adult isn&#39;t for me. I may change my mind someday, and I have no choice but to grow older, but in many ways I&#39;m still the same kid who spends her summers having adventures, playing with her dolls, having snowball fights in winter, watching cartoons, trick or treats on Halloween, plays video games, seeing the magic in everything. This is so underrated. This hit so hard i cried like a baby at 1 am

Makes me cry about when I was little :/ being adopted but then having to be diagnosed with medical conditions, then people make fun of me but I never cared I went through with life :) but some days you have to let go. I don’t want to grow up because I have no dad and I only have a mom and when she dies I’ll never have a family member as memorable as mom, she always was there for me. (for the record My medical conditions aren’t life threatening nor are they all rare) the only two rare medical conditions I have are CMT 1A and Hypotonia. For all the kids watching this don’t let kids bully you because your parents are waiting for you to come home that day and someday you won’t be a kid anymore. Also everybody like this song, and give it up for Maddie she’s an amazing singer with amazing talent!
