Buffalo Nichols defies expectations on his second album, 'The Fatalist,' infusing the blues with surprising elements like 808 programming, chopped up Charley Patton samples, and atmospheric synths. This is no gimmicky fusion, but a testament to Nichols' vision of blues intimately tied to everyday life in 2023. The album's complexities and gray areas explore themes of responsibility and self-definition. Nichols' songwriting is sincere and refuses to accept pat solutions, while his low, guttural baritone dominates the songs. The slow drip of his songwriting adds drama, accentuated by the dark and dewy production. Self-produced at home, Nichols draws from his DIY experience and embraces drum machines as a natural rhythmic vehicle for the blues. The album's most ambitious track, his take on Blind Willie Johnson's "You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond," captures the joyous claustrophobia of classic gospel. Nichols intertwines the past and present, bridging traditional songs with contemporary interpretations. 'The Fatalist' is a personal exploration of agency and individuality in a world that challenges creative control.

The Fatalist

Buffalo Nichols—Fat Possum’s first solo blues signing in nearly 20 years—has announced the release of his self-titled debut album, due out on October 15th, 2021. The Austin, TX-based guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist has also shared lead single “Lost & Lonesome,” a tender, aching ballad. “‘Lost & Lonesome’ was inspired by years of traveling alone, wandering city streets looking for a place to call home maybe for a night, maybe forever,” explains Carl “Buffalo” Nichols. “It takes you back to those moments in life when you must leave home either physically or figuratively—going somewhere unfamiliar and on your own. The soundtrack to a wandering soul. An ode to loneliness. When you see a wandering soul, all you can do is wonder how they got there. This song gives a glimpse into the mind of that traveler looking for a friend and a place to call home.”

Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Buffalo Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer.

Carl “Buffalo” Nichols, who is also featured in “When The Levee Breaks” in our Peace Through Music: A Global Event for the Environment, is a soulful blues guitarist, songwriter and vocalist born in Houston, Texas and raised in Milwaukee’s predominantly Black North end. Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future?
