Juliette and Joachim from Pearl & The Oysters are two of my best friends in Los Angeles, and we’ve casually collaborated on a few of their tunes over the years. I felt it was long overdue to have an official track together, and we wrote and recorded most of it from scratch in a single day at my studio Honeymoon Suite, finishing it up in a second session months later. The song originated from something Juliette wrote, which became the first verse. While we were working on an instrumental idea for the chorus, I started singing the chorus from a completely different song called “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun,” which I had partially demoed a while back. It was a beautiful serendipity that our two ideas lined up perfectly.

“Coasting On Fumes” is a song title that popped into my head while driving around Los Angeles on an empty tank of gas. Jordana and I had been online acquaintances for a bit, and when she came into town from New York, we set up some time to write. The song title came up, and I think it hit a nerve as we were both feeling a bit burned out on the daily grind. We wrote the song in a day. The original version had only Jordana singing, but I loved it so much I had to make it a duet and steal it for my album.

Check out the full music video for “One Call, That’s All” from my new album ‘What’s For Breakfast?’ out March 29th! 

The title “One Call, That’s All” is inspired by an ambulance-chasing personal injury lawyer in my hometown who famously used the slogan on billboards and TV commercials. While writing it with help from my friend Paul Cherry, I envisioned a music video where I play such a lawyer, and the idea expanded to riff on a variety of late night infomercial tropes thanks to director Nathan Castiel. The song, the sound of which was inspired by the guitar rock of my youth, flips the titular phrase to simply say, “I love you. Please call me.”
