Anna Calvi

Anna Calvi (born Anna Margaret Michelle Calvi in London on 24 September 1980) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. Her accolades include three Mercury Prize nominations, one Brit Award nomination, and a European Border Breakers Award.

Born of an English mother and Italian father, Calvi grew up being exposed to a multitude of genres of music by her music-loving father. According to the Suzanne and I Songfacts, she cites the classical composers Ravel and Debussy among her influences and her music has been described as "brooding melodramatic goth-pop." 

At the age of 17 and after eschewing art school in favor of a music degree, Calvi began to learn her trade and started to assemble musical partnerships. In 2006, she met percussionist and harmonium player Mally Harpaz and later recruited drummer Daniel Maiden-Wood. Her initial gigs took place in and around London in late 2008 and 2009. The release of her debut single, "Jezebel," in the fall of 2010 was an electric cover version of the Edith Piaf standard.

The young Calvi soon captured the attention of Domino Records' boss Lawrence Bell after a glowing reference from former Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones, who had witnessed one of Calvi's gigs in Manchester. Bell quickly signed her to his label. Ryder-Jones was not the only celebrity admirer of Calvi's, an acquaintance with the aforementioned Brian Eno similarly urged him to listen to this emerging talent. After hearing Calvi's raw and unplugged performances on The Attic Sessions (the early demos that she recorded on an 8-track in her parent's attic), the distinguished producer soon became her mentor and unofficial cheerleader.

Calvi entered Black Box Studios in France with the much-lauded producer Rob Ellis to record her self-titled debut album in 2010. Using vintage analog equipment, Calvi created a velvet Wall of Sound that justified the hype in the buildup to its 2011 release.

Her second album "One Breath" was released in October 2013. It was produced by John Congleton across two locations - Box Box Studios in France and Elmwood Recording Studios in Texas. A singer/songwriter with an operatic voice and virtuosic guitar skills, Anna Calvi makes powerful, passionate music influenced by flamenco, goth rock, and classical composers such as  and . On early albums like 2011's Anna Calvi and 2013's One Breath, she used the formidable strength of her voice and guitar to express archetypal lust and heartache. Later, on 2018's Hunter, she adopted a looser, more vulnerable style as she challenged conventional notions of sexuality and gender identity. As Calvi's music evolved and expanded to include projects such as scoring the TV series Peaky Blinders, the intensity of her work never wavered. Neither did her critical acclaim, which included multiple Mercury Prize nominations.

Just finished watching Peaky Blinders, and I think this music has gain more meaning after the last episode

I was devastated when Bowie died, I walked all around town in the snow crying and singing, could not listen to Blackstar for nearly a year and a half without bawling my eyes out. This is beautiful, I truly believe David Bowie would be proud! If he were there in the audience I have no doubt he’d be smiling big cheering these ladies on. ❤️

Even in death David Bowie is the catalyst for profoundly beautiful and challenging musical art. Miss him more now than when he left us.

My girlfriend was devastated when Sir Bowie passed, I too was also very sad but when I found out he was suffering from cancer I found something happy. I felt like this album he’s like letting us know that he’s okay, that he knows he’s dying but he’s okay with it. This album is like something he left for all of us to hold on too. Like if you miss him, just put this album on and he’s right there next to you.

When you love the cover of a song as much as the original song, that means the song is capable of lingering in eternity without stopping for stupidity,wars,greed above all, because it transcends it all.

Still has devastating impact - and this is one of the very very few Bowie covers that is good enough.

I wanted to wish you a merry Christmas and happy new year, I hope it will be a good one for you all. I've been in a crazy full on writing mode these last few months and I'm now going through everything I have with Mally, my musical soul mate, and I'm weaving this record together. It's been a real labour of love, I hope you will like it. I've been listening to Mac Demarco, Tame Impala's new record, Beethoven and Bruce Springsteen's Jungleland.. ! Oh, and also a beautiful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone called 'Sacco e Vanzetti' which Patrick Wolf sent me, it features Joan Baez, it's definitely worth a listen..
